What I Offer:
My editing services include corrections in grammar,
syntax, spelling, and punctuation. I may include
suggestions about moving sentences, paragraphs or whole
sections to increase clarity.
For nonfiction projects (memoir, self-help and how-to,
essays, business writing, creative nonfiction, book
proposals), my
editing services also cover content, structure, pacing,
clarity, maintaining a high level of engagement and
interest, allowing for a gradual mastery of material to
assure reader satisfaction, and other conventions of
nonfiction writing, as well as the services listed
above.
My overall objective is to help you achieve your writing
goals and to help your writing say what you want it to
say in clear, understandable and appealing sentences and
paragraphs.
For poetry, I’ll comment
on the overall content and theme,
as well as such structural matters as rhyme, meter,
metaphor, line breaks, alliteration and other poetic
devices. Rather than “editing” your poetry, I see myself
as a poetry coach, pointing out the best of your work
and indicating where I think you could
improve things.
Professional
Qualifications.
I received my undergraduate degree with a double major
in English and French, followed by a master’s degree in
French Literature. I taught French in a community
college, then entered law school and received my J.D.
After writing enough legal briefs to paper an entire
courthouse, I moved on to free-lance writing as a career
path. For several years I wrote and had published
magazine articles on a variety of topics. I also edited
four anthologies of poetry and personal essays, all
published by Adams Media, Inc. I have edited or
critiqued several book-length projects as well as
numerous essays, poems, and business projects. I’ve
judged several essay and poetry contests.
I’ll also be happy to pass on my knowledge of the
book-publishing industry, how to write a query letter
that will get attention (and of course, I’ll help you
edit it!), and how to find an agent.
I’ve always written poetry, and have had numerous poems
published in various literary journals. Many of my poems
have garnered awards in poetry contests. I’ve had one
chapbook published and am working on a full-length
collection. As your poetry coach, I can make suggestions
about how to strengthen and hone your natural gifts.
As a published author, I've also been on the other side
of the editing process. My own books have been edited.
Other professionals have edited my magazine articles and
book reviews. I know how skillful editing helps you “see
with fresh eyes” what could be improved.

Maril was invaluable with her editing advice - she was clear and
direct and zeroed in on the changes I needed to consider while
at the same time offering support and encouragement. She has the
remarkable ability of all good editors to access a writer's
strengths and writing style and build on them without
overpowering. Along with being a writer, I'm a writing teacher,
so I know what works. I recommend her highly.
-- Janet Sunderland, creative nonfiction author and writing
instructor
"Maril Crabtree is really great to work with -- her
encouragement, even as she was editing my poems, kept the
project moving forward. "I Knee-ded It" would not be in print
without Maril's assistance. "
-- Peg Nichols, author,
The Mediation Survivor's Handbook and I
Knee-ded It.

"Having proven herself
to be an accomplished and successful author,
Maril Crabtree brings to her editing a
credibility that can only come from knowledge
of, and first-hand experience with, all facets
of a writer's life. Her excellent command of the
English language and her skill at both poetry
and prose enable her to provide solid guidance
without compromising the individual's own style,
message, or creativity. I greatly value her
input." ---
